It's probably not your hormones

Hey Reader!

I'm going to say something that might feel controversial.

The number of women who have an actual hormonal condition that directly causes weight gain is small. Much smaller than the wellness industry would have you believe.

I know. That's not what you've been told. Every Instagram ad, every functional medicine practitioner, every "women over 40" article has pointed you toward your hormones as the explanation for why nothing is working.

And I understand why that narrative feels true. Your body has changed. Things are harder than they used to be. So when someone offers you a reason — even one that puts the problem outside your control — it's a relief.

But here's what's actually happening for most women over 40.

Decades of restriction. Undereating. Overexercising. Fearing carbs. Skipping meals. When you live that way long enough, your body adapts. Not by dramatically slowing your metabolism — that effect is actually pretty minimal. What changes is everything around it.

Your energy drops. Your sleep suffers. Your resilience to stress quietly erodes. You start moving less without even realizing it. You make different food choices — not because you have no willpower, but because your body is running on too little fuel to make the same decisions it would otherwise make.

The problem isn't a broken metabolism. It's a body that has learned to cope with not enough — and is showing you that in every part of your life, not just on the scale.

That's not a hopeless situation. It's actually the most fixable one there is. And this is the most empowering thing to understand.

I know this because I lived it. And I know it because I've watched it happen for the women I work with — women who came in convinced their bodies were broken, and left knowing exactly how to work with them instead of against them.

Tomorrow I want to show you what that actually looks like.
